Information about BIRDERSMS

Austria is a central European country with many possibilities to observe interesting birds, also rare birds, beside it is entirely landlocked (well about 420+ species). Interesting birding sites are located in different habitats, from the steppe lake Neusiedlersee with alkaline water to the glaciers of the Alps. Still, the "density" of birders is rather low compared with our neighboring countries. In order to promote the exchange of information amongst birders BIRDERSMS is a modern substitute for more conservative message and information systems. Interesting information are distributed almost "in real time" via GSM net. Since Austria has one of the highest densities of cellular GSM phones with well established GSM nets, the function of BIRDERSMS is secured. BIRDERSMS is a suitable service to enhance communication amongst birders in Austria and neighboring countries.

How BIRDERSMS works

• MEGAs, rarities which demand documentation to the national rare bird committee, the rarities committee AFK: see BIRDING and the liste of BirdLife Austria
• interesting observations on migration, year`s first, updates, eceptional concentrations of erruptive species (waxwings, jays, tits, etc.)

 The subdivision of a country is easy and I suggest the following to happen in Austria: (in place by 2003-02 R):

WEST (i. e. Lake Constance, delta of rhine, Vorarlberg, Tyrol) R
EAST (i. e. Lake Neusiedl Area, rivers Danube, March, Thaya, Styria and Burgenland) R
CENTRAL (i. e. river Inn and "Alpenvorland" Lakes, Carinthia with many lakes)

The best spotter and message poster will be awarded a price including a free BIRDERSMS membership for the following year.

How to compose a SMS:

Locality: Area with village name, country or province (single letter code for Austria, e.g. M = STeiermark/STYRIA). Please state if the bird is stationary. Species, no., age: Species name (German or Engflish), use 6-letter code used for international communication: Latin stort version of genus and species:e.g. CALMEL = Pectoral Sandpiper Calidris melanotus. This HEXA-Code will be available soon. Time: If not in the very moment (same hour) please specify time/date. Name: of observer/birder/reporting member. BIRDERSMS members simply send their short code: 1st for first name and 2nd and 3rd position for surname (e.g. MRI = Martin Riesing). In Hungary a four letter code (3 surname / 1 prename) applies. First BIRDERSMS Meeting took place from 2003-02-28 till 03-02 across Eastern Austria (meeting place NP Neusiedlersee - Seewinkel). LINK.

Registration of BIRDERSMS

In order to be part of BIRDERSMS get your registration form (sorry, only in German right now!) and poste your filled in form to BIRDERSMS.

1. Availability is dependend on network carriers and connectivity of your mobile device (transmission is independend of BIRDERSMS)
2. there is no whatever reliability of BIRDERSMS (missed news, Meldung, Flurschaden, etc...)
3. user`s conditions of BIRDERSMS (EUR 20.- / annual fee in Austria) (LIST)
4.  BIRDERSMS subscribers must agree formally (written) to receive BIRDERSMS messages (SMS) according to national laws and regulations.
